Why Study Shakespeare?
The problems we will face in the 21st century will be more complex than ever. We know many of the problems we face – climate change, war and violence, prejudice and stereotyping - but none of us can imagine all of the challenges that lie ahead. When looking to the future, it is always important to understand the past. History and literature can teach us about ourselves and better prepare us for what lies ahead.
Shakespeare remains one of the greatest playwrights in the English language. He captured the essence of his times, yet his themes and characters have transcended those times, speaking to countless generations.
In Shakespeare, we find the great themes of life – ambition, love, hatred, fear, revenge and joy – and his stories have remained central to our understanding of what it means to be human. To see a performance of a Shakespeare play is to see ordinary characters living through extraordinary circumstances. Through their experiences, we can find truths that resonate in our modern world.
Shakespeare has the power to make us laugh, cry, or sometimes both at the same time! His stories are magical and exciting. Whether we are shipwrecked and pursued by magical beasts, surrounded by witches on a desolate heath, or transformed into a donkey by a fairy queen, Shakespeare feeds the imagination and holds up a mirror to our own power to change ourselves and the world in which we live.
It’s never just enough to read Shakespeare! Shakespeare wrote plays that were meant to be seen live! We offer lots of hands-on programs to help you fully experience the wonder and excitement of Shakespeare’s plays! We’d love to see you sometime!
