Wordy Wednesday – “Something wicked this way comes!”
UncategorizedComments Off on Wordy Wednesday – “Something wicked this way comes!”
Here we go with another Wordy Wednesday! This week we have a phrase for you coming from the tragedy Macbeth.
Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in the early 1600s and it has become one of his most popular plays. The play features three witches that taunt Macbeth throughout the play and they introduced the phrase “something wicked this way comes”. The ‘something wicked’ that they refer to is the traitor Macbeth!
This phrase is still commonly used, especially around Halloween. There’s both a book and movie called Something Wicked This Way Comes and it’s also very often parodied. The 2005 movie Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit used “Something wicked this way hops” as a tag line. Also, various companies like Wal-Mart and Lexus have used it in ad campaigns.
Our favourite usage was when John Williams wrote ‘Double Trouble’ for the third installment of the Harry Potter series, the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Hogwarts choir can be seen singing it in the dining hall, immortalizing Shakespeare’s words in a catchy tune!
Come back on Friday for the next installment of Photo Friday!
