KING LEAR IN NORTHWEST TORONTO

Due to the nature of recent developments with Covid-19, drop in sessions at Community Place Hub and York West Active Living Centre are temporarily postponed until further notice. We imagine these may resume the week of April 6th, 2020, and will provide updates here.

Do you dream of taking the stage?

Have you always wanted to create, perform or design for a theatre play?

Are you over the age of 55?

Now’s your chance!

Shakespeare in Action, with the support of the New Horizons for Seniors program, is proud to produce KING LEAR IN WESTON, a community-engaged theatre project that is created by and for seniors living in northwest Toronto.

How will it work?

March 2020 Try It Out Shakespeare in Action will be leading free once-a-week drop-in sessions lead by professional actor and director Pete Smith at Community Place Hub, York West Active Living Centre, and Central King Seniors Residence.  This is a perfect way you can get a taste of the project without committing.
April 2020 – May 2020 A Team is Formed Those interested in continuing on with this project (either as an actor, director, costume designer, stage manager, etc) will be invited to attend bi-weekly creation rehearsals at Shakespeare in Action’s studio at the Artscape Weston Common.  Become part of using your own stories and experiences to adapt one of Shakespeare’s most well known plays, KING LEAR.
June 2020 Perform a Play To celebrate Seniors Month, you will perform the production at the Rockport Performance Hall inside the Artscape Weston Common.  Shakespeare in Action will provide free transportation for other seniors homes in northwest Toronto.  Each performance will end with a larger discussion with the invited audience around themes explored in the play, including: dementia, financial abuse and elder abuse.

*project schedule may change depending on availability and feedback from participants
